A tribe of harvest mice, led by Pentecost and helped by snake and frog, leave their wasteland home for oily green pool and Lickey Top where they hope to have a brighter, greener future. But the journey to oily green pool is fraught with danger; amongst the obstacles the mice encounter is a river, ambush path which is home to an aggressive tribe of renegade mice known as ruffians, Woodpecker woods and snake's unsavoury cousin.
