"Bertie in the Bag" presents the further adventures of Bertie, the mischievous hippo, and his long-suffering owner, Thomas. In this story Thomas is a little nervous on his first day at a new school but with Bertie in his bag he feels more confident. Bertie, however, is reluctant to stay hidden and miss out on the fun, and is soon up to his old tricks again. Paddy Bouma has also written "Bertie at the Dentist's" and "Bertie Visits Granny". She was recommended for the Kate Greenaway Medal for her illustrations for "Are We Nearly There?".
